End of year Exhibition {UN}LUCKY

On Thursday June 20th our end of year exhibition had began. Before guests started to arrive, we began by having a group photo shoot directed by Kevin Furlong to commemorate the big night.  With everyone unaware of what to expect on the night, the photo shoot was enjoyable to loosen us up and get us all in a good frame of mind.

The night was a big success, a large turnout of guests to see all of our work and offer encouragement to our futures. I was amazed and happy to hear such pleasant remarks about my work displayed, especially from past lecturers who I hadn’t seen in over 12 months.

Quotes: a visual take on the words of others

After a few weeks of planning and organising the layout and structure of my poster design, my quote posters were signed and numbered ready for the exhibition night. I had 9 copies printed for a limited time only and no more would be printed or sold ever again. The overall process had been very successful and i was looking forward to seeing the turnout on the night and see everyone else’s work.

Quotes: a visual take on the words of others

With the quote picked for my film The Shawshank Redemption. I started working on the design of my poster.

As i mentioned in an earlier post, i wanted to make the design look like a setting from the film. So with this in mind it was logical to make the setting a prison cell.

So with the development of this design i wanted to make a challenge for myself and test my skills as a designer.  I started by making this poster completely from scratch, i used numerous lighting effects to and gradients to make the scene look as realistic as possible. the most difficult task was creating light shining through bars and it did take some effort and editing around to make it look perfect.

The next part was to start working with adding in the quote. Like in the film i wanted to make the text carved into the wall. I wanted it to stand out and look realistic. After much tweaking and finding the right typeface, it was starting to look the part. Once the text was added, i thought that i needed something extra, some element that was also in the film. With that in mind i thought it would be best to add the crow ‘jake’ into the design since the crow plays a part of the film.

With the design finished, all that was left to do was to print the designs off, number and sign them ready for the exhibition.

Quotes: a visual take on the words of others

As i mentioned in an earlier post, myself and the Chester graphic design students were throwing an exhibition to raise money for our final show in June.

The topic of our exhibition was quotes. As i mentioned i enjoyed TV and film so i was more interested in participating in this exhibition.

I had already picked a film in mind: The Shawshank Redemption.

And i had started looking into suitable quotes to work with:

“I wish i could, but prison is not a fairytale world.”

“Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin'”

“I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.”

“In prison a man will do almost anything to keep his mind occupied.”

“Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things and no good thing ever dies.”

“I find I’m so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it’s the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.”

Each of these quotes would be perfect to use for my poster. After much though i decided which quote i wanted to go forward with and that was “get busy livin’ or get busy dyin'”. This quote was simple and effective and would stand out well in my planned poster design i mentioned in an earlier post.

Quotes: a visual take on the words of others

To raise money for our final exhibition, our design group are banding together and designing a poster exhibition to sell and raise money.
The theme for this exhibition i was interested in straight away, was ‘quotes’. Since i watch a lot of TV and Film i tend to quote things as a habit. So immediately i wanted to make a poster for this.

Quotes Exhibition

The problem was thinking of a suitable quote that could be designed well. At first all i could think of was quotes i really wanted to do such as, “why so serious?” from the dark knight, but i found myself sceptical on how it would look.

It was up until this point when i started thinking some of my favourite films like Terminator 2, Fight club and Rocky and then it hit me and i knew what i was going to do. The Shawshank Redemption.

For many years i have loved this film, there is nothing i hate about it, from the music to the cast it is a perfect case of cinema. Therefore i wanted to design a piece that would show how good this film is.
Rather than just using a quote, i also wanted to design a set for where it would be placed, so a prison cell would be the ideal place. And what better way to show the quote than have it carved into a wall with a rock hammer?
Of course i want to design this piece in the sense that not everyone has seen it so there wont be any holes in the wall slightly on show through a poster, no i want this to be subtle and the quote speak for itself.
However at this stage i am still working on the design, for more information on the exhibition, follow our Twitter page: @quoteschester
