Research Methods: Poster Design

From the successful turnout of my first four designs, i was more than confident with my the way i was working. So with this in mind i approached the final 3 designs like the others and tried to capture them all in a simple way that would get the audiences attention.

Here are my final three designs for Judge Dredd, The Karate Kid and Highlander;

With the posters now finished, i was happy that they had turned out so well. Although each poster took up a lot of time and effort, the end result was more than worth it. The next step is to start working on how these posters will effect people through social media. I plan on making visuals to show through my rationale of how this will  work.

With the turnout on my batman design, i continued making this simple style with my other posters. the next designs i started working on each had a different style so it required a lot more work involved creating them from scratch and making them look simplistic.

Since my designs were going well and i was receiving good feedback from friends and students, i was confident to carry on with my work and begin the next 3 designs.

Research Methods: Poster Design

After a few weeks of planning out my ideas for the posters, i had finally finished my first design. Since i wanted to make them as simple as possible it was a difficult challenge. However i think this design is working well and im looking forward to continuing with the other designs.

Research Methods: Poster Design

As i mentioned i wanted to work on specific scenes from the selected movies. So i started working on illustrations to make them stand out well.

This process did take a while to get perfect since i wanted them to be spot on in linking to the films.

With the success of my illustrations the next step was to plan out and begin designing each poster.

Research Methods: Poster Design

Through my research into rebooted films, i began looking into the originals and what made them so popular. As each original film had its own unique style such as 1990s total recall had classic scenes like the three breasted martian or the comedic ‘two weeks’ scene. Today these things stay with us and remind us of how much we enjoyed them. This is the kind of design I want to create; designs that take you back and remind you of why you enjoyed them so much.

To begin my poster designs i started looking into promotional material for each of the films i had listed in my previous entry.
Closely looking into each film to gain inspiration on how to approach them. With this in mind, i began to pick out favourite scenes from each film and developing an layout from there.

From Superman, i saw it as the helicopter scene in which the character is first revealed flying through the air. I thought it would be good to create a poster piece on the character soaring through the sky in a simplistic style.vlcsnap-00019

From the karate kid, i had to be the famous crane kick to build suspense at the end of the fight. From research, most fan made designs were of the beach scene in which he balances on a post, but i thought that this fight scene would be a better recreation.

From highlander it had to be the final sword fight scene in the large open space. The way this was filmed made the characters look like silhouettes and had bright lights from the windows, this i want to recreate and recapture.

For Robocop i thought to use the firing range scene where the character is first revealed in a dramatic way.

For batman i always thought the ending scene with the bat signal was so dramatic and and powerful, so i want to portray that in my design to promote this film.

For Total Recall i wanted to work on the alien hand and incorporate it within the film because although it is obvious to people who have seen the film, but it is also a mystery to those who havent.

For judge dredd it was difficult to pick one scene to use in the design so i picked two that i liked best. One scene i thought that stood out well was where the judges see out the chief justice.

And the second scene i wanted to use was the final scene with judge dredd on his bike looking over mega city.

The next step is to develop these scenes out into ideas to be used in posters and make them simplistic so that they are still engaging.

Research Methods: Poster Design

As I had mentioned in an earlier post; I wanted to create a series of movie posters to promote original films over the rebooted ones. With there being many films rebooted lately, the originals were becoming less and less popular. Therefore I wanted to create pieces of work that would want people to see them.

Originally I wanted to make promotional videos that would be made more upbeat to connect with a younger audience much like fan made videos on YouTube attract viewers and generate comments and opinions. However I decided against this idea since it would take up a lot more time and planning to structure the trailers and find suitable soundtracks along with copyright laws. Therefore i decided it would be best to design poster that can recapture audiences and attract new ones.

For my designs I wanted to base them on popular originals that had been rebooted recently.
From my research I found a selection of films I wanted to base my work on:

movie
Superman (1978)                                                The Karate Kid (1984)

movie2
Highlander (1986)                                                RoboCop (1987)

movie3
Batman (1989)                                                   Total Recall (1990)

movie4
Judge Dredd (1995)

Given that all of these films were popular in their day, what’s stopping them from still being popular?
All films can be marketed in a way to attract an audience, with this in mind I plan to do just that and reconnect people to these classic films.

Research Methods: Poster Design

From an earlier blog post i mentioned about my thoughts regarding reboots. To continue further with this, i have started a personal brief which will highlight attention to original films that have been a strong impact to people across the globe.

An idea i have had from time to time is to create strong visual posters that will reengage with old fans but still attract new ones in the process.
Designers have been a strong influence on me to go down this route such as Olly Moss www.ollymoss.com who has created an impressive range of movie posters from Star Wars to Rocky.

These designs are very creative in the fact that they capture the essence of the film using negative space and relatable illustrations from the films such as the iconic running up the stairs in Rocky.

As part of my personal brief, it is my aim to make a series of posters to promote a selection of original films over the reboots.

Total Recall at its best?

Is this not a better take on total recall? showing the trailer for the original film in a new way, bringing life to a classic film from the 90s!
